Wet Sumping?
Wet sumping can occur on all oil tank models (most BSA and Norton) with geared oil pumps. When left standing for a period of time the oil can drain from the tank through the engine and then through worn gears on the oil pump to the sump. Consequently when the engine is started the oil is burnt off causing smoke.
This can be remedied by a new oil pump. However before anything, first check the non-return valve spring and ball for wear. Many oil pumps will be the original units and wet sumping is often a sign that a replacement is due.
